How to Make Glass with Pictures

Place the shelf in one of the central slots in the kiln so it’s not too close to the top and not too close to the bottom. Try to leave a ¼ inch (6.35mm) between your glass design on the kiln shelf and the side of the kiln itself so your glass has room to expand. Breaking pliers are used to break glass apart along the lines you’ve scored. To test the compatibility of two separate glasses, fuse two small pieces of them together and then let them cool. If you notice any cracks or evidence of stress in the glass, you know the two glasses have different COE’s. Press the foil down hard with tongue depressor, or other firm instrument.

Aluminum oxide or silica carbide can be typical grit mediums often used in sandblasting glass. This can create the same effect as acid etching. I tend to use this method for my work because I have better control… And it is much safer than acid etching. Kiln casting glass can involve hot molten glass poured into a mold inside the kiln. Casting with molds in a kiln includes using crushed glass or a powdery glass paste known as ‘pate de verre‘. The only hard part would be cutting the long stem.

Fusing glass at home: a step by step guide

Place the pattern under the glass and trace the outline with a thin permanent marker. You'll need to gather some specific equipment for making your stained glass project. You can find these items at most hobby or craft stores, but especially at stained glass supply shops.

Make sure it is not easily accessible to children or pets, not when you are working and especially when you’re not around. Homogenize and remove bubbles from the molten glass. This means stirring the mixture to a consistent thickness and adding chemicals such as sodium sulfate, sodium chloride or antimony oxide.

Step 5: Cutting Curves

Switch out cotton balls if you see the ball getting dirty. Scrub any dirt or residue off the glass to prepare it for painting. Dampen a cloth with isopropyl alcohol and gently rub the cloth over the glass. For a three-dimensional piece of art, choose any drinking glass or glass statue. Solvent-based paint takes 2 hours to set and 8 hours to fully dry. Water-based paint takes 20 minutes to set, and 2-3 days to fully dry.

This isn’t advised if you have anything complicated in the firing, for example extra thick pieces, wire or copper sheet. It is a generic schedule for a full fuse on two layers of artglass up to 1foot square . Be aware that this program can only be a starting point, as each kiln has its own character and behaves differently.

Warm Glass

Sodium carbonate lowers the temperature necessary to make glass commercially. However, it permits water to pass through the glass, so calcium oxide, or lime, is added to negate this property. Oxides of magnesium and/or aluminum may also be added to make the glass more durable. Generally, these additives take up no more than 26 to 30 percent of the glass mixture. Outlining your artwork makes it easier to fill in distinct areas with color, and it’ll make your artwork pop.

Basically, hot glass working involves molten glass with a temperature around 2000° degrees. This hot viscous glass can be used in glass blowing, sculpting, and casting into molds. Take the term ‘glass blowing’ for instance… Sometimes people think of ‘glass blowing’ as something done using long blow pipes with molten glass from a furnace. Other times, they may refer to ‘flame working’ as glass blowing.

Soldering Iron - You'll need a soldering iron that's designed for stained glass, minimum 75 watts. For most projects, I prefer a wide soldering tip. Hold the solder over the seams and melt it with the soldering iron. See that the melted solder covers the foil entirely. When you’re done, turn the soldered glass over and solder the other side as well.

Choose oil-based pens instead of regular markers since they’ll be more resistant to smudging. If you’d prefer to draw your own image, create a drawing in a digital design software and print it out, or draw your image on a regular sheet of paper. The most common way to get glass is to use a cheap photo frame. Open the back of the frame as if you were going to put in a photo. Then, just gently lift the glass panel out to remove it.

An image with clear, bold lines works best for tracing. Scale the image to the size of your piece of glass, and print it out on standard paper. Once you have a good-sized space set aside for your studio, you will need to gather your tools and equipment, including the furnaces.

Once all of the pieces are tacked together, you can tin the seams. This just means you apply a thin, flat amount of solder to all of the seams, completely coating all of the copper foil. Be sure to apply flux to all of the seams first.
